Final PaperA sociologist must be able to analyze racial and ethnic differences in different national contexts. Race and ethnicity are constructed differently in different places and at different times. For example, in the United States, race is defined in a way such that two children with the same biological parents cannot possibly be of different races. In contrast, some countries, such as the Dominican Republic, define race in a way that would allow for siblings (born of the same parents) to be placed into different racial categories. In order to develop this skill, you will select a particular country and analyze the ethnic stratification within that society. For this assignment, you must focus on ethnic stratification and conflict, including evidence of prejudice and discrimination. In addition to a description of the selected society and its ethnic groups, include an analysis of similarities and differences in the society’s ethnic stratification system as compared to the United States. You may select one of the countries on the CIA World Factbook website for comparison to the United States in terms of the ethnic stratification system. The following information should be included in your Final Paper:TitleDescribe the selected country’s society, focusing on ethnic groups, stratification, and conflict.Provide examples of the ethnic problems in that society, including evidence of prejudice and discrimination.Discuss what the experts say about ethnic problems (or ethnic harmony) in the selected country’s society.Compare the selected country’s society to society in the United States. Evaluate similarities and differences related to ethnic groups, stratification, and conflict, using specific examples gathered in your research.Conclude with reflections and thoughts about ethnic groups and the societies in which we live.ReferencesAcademic research papers must meet certain standards of quality recognized by the academic community. What constitutes quality, academic research?Primary (original) sources written by experts in the field of study.Secondary sources supported by research in primary sources.Credible sources (experts in the field; well-known theorists; sources which use primary and secondary sources to support claims).Relevant research (materials are pertinent to the area of study). In graduate work, the use of peer-reviewed journal articles (journal articles reviewed by recognized experts in the relevant field of study) is required.Educational and government websites (those ending with a web URL suffix of .edu or .gov) may be appropriate in some cases but should be evaluated carefully.Writing the Final PaperThe Final PaperMust be eight to 10 double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and formatted according to APA style Must include a title page with the following:Title of paperStudent’s nameCourse name and numberInstructor’s nameDate submittedMust begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.Must use at least seven scholarly resourcesMust document all sources in APA styleMust include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA styleRunning head: FINAL PAPER PROPOSAL AND OUTLINE

My country of choice for the analysis is Kenya. Kenya is an African country located in
the east African part of the African continent. This is a country that has a lot of resources when it
comes to the economy and it has a very strong economy when compared to other east African
economies (Murunga and Nasong’o, 2007). The country comprises of many different ethnic
communities and this is a factor that makes it a very good choice for the paper. The main ethnic
in the country are the Kikuyu 22%, Luhya 14%, Luo 13%, Kalenjin 12%, Kamba 11%, Kisii 6%,
Meru 6%, other African 15%, non-African (Asian, European, and Arab) 1%.
These are the main ethnic communities and they form the large part of the whole country as a
whole. I believe that this is the most suitable society for my final paper because the huge
difference in the ethnic communities has proven to have some negative effects. The problems
that have been caused by the ethnic differences are well documented by all means and this
provides a good source of information. There is also a huge difference in the cultural information
and this makes sure that it is different from the American setting.
Such a difference will provide a clear means for the analysis that needs to be done as well
as the comparison between the two societies. This is important in helping one to be able to have
a clear idea of the difference that exists in the world today on the issue of ethnic domination in
national issues. There is also the issue of resource allocation and this will be able to provide a
clear analysis of the issue in both societies involved. This is very important as it makes sure that
all the different aspects caused by the ethnic differences are assessed and analyzed.

Analysis of ethnic communities in Kenya
1. Selected country is Kenya
1. Kenya is an African country located in the east African part of the African
continent and has a population of around 45 million people according to the
most recent estimates.
2. The main communities are the Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo, Kamba, Kalenjin, Kisii and
Meru communities. Together, they form 84% of the whole population in the
country.
3. The country is divided between people that speak different languages.
2. Ethnic Problems or Harmony
1. Prejudice and discrimination are among the most common problems and are
mostly witnessed in the job market for both public and private institutions.
2. A good example of the ethnic problem witnessed is the discrimination in the
giving of job opportunities.
3. The main consequences that are witnessed is that there are a large group of
people that often see themselves as isolated and they tend to be bitter causing
other problems like crime increase.
4. The main examples include riots, forceful displacement of people from their
land as well as a very unfair wealth distribution in the country.
3. Research on Ethnicity in Selected Country

1. Many experts attribute the problems that come as a result of the ethnic groups
to the political will in the country as well as the wealth distribution in the
different parts of the country.
2. Studies that have been conducted in the country have found out that most of the
problems are caused by the political affiliation of the different tribes as well as
the government positions allocated to these people.
4. Comparison with the United States
1. America has less ethnic groups with the main being whites, African Americans
as well as the Asian Americans who form a small portion of the overall group.
2. The ethnic stratification is done on the basis of the skin color and not the
language one speaks.
3. Ethnic conflict and discrimination in the US is mainly done on the basis of the
color that one has.
4. Similarities between selected country and the United States
1. The first similarity is that there are more than 3 groups in both countries
2. There is a group that is predominant in both countries
3. In both countries, the struggle for political power and more resources is
notable in both cases.
4. Research has established that in both countries, it is the ethnic minorities that
suffer most.
5. Differences between selected country and the United States
1. One main difference is that there are very many ethnic groups in Kenya as
compared to America.

2. America’s main ethnic group consists of more than 50% of the whole
population while in Kenya the main group is only 22%.
3. The main difference in the ethnic conflict is that the conflicts are well handled
in America while they are not in Kenya.
4. Researchers have been able to identify the problems in Kenya to be more
political oriented as opposed to America where they are more wealth oriented.
6. Conclusion
In conclusion, there are ethnic communities in both countries but they use different
measures to define themselves. There are also different issues affecting each country. Though
they may be related, it is possible to identify clear differences between them.
