Communication is an essential tool for human beings to seek out self-actualization.
Human beings are naturally social animals and constantly seek out with whom to make
connections with. Communication is defined as “a process where two or more individuals strive
to create a shared memory using verbal and nonverbal messages in a variety of contexts” (Bevan,
2014). Is communication truly important? Does it affect interactions with other individuals,
family or otherwise, how? As Bevan stated, communication can be verbal or nonverbal
messages, but communication messages can be misinterpreted when nonverbal gestures relay a
message opposite of what you are saying. In the following paragraphs I will analyze my personal
computer-mediated-communication during the course of a single day.
How much time do you use a computer or phone to communicate with others throughout a
twenty-four hour period. You may be surprised with the result if you took the time to take note
of each time you use your phone or computer to communicate and how you communicate.
Personally, I realized that I use my phone and computer a lot even on a slow day, almost to a
point of dependency. The chart below shows how many times I used my phone and computer. As
you can see I used my phone four times and I used my computer five times. One should pay
special attention to their computer-mediated-communication because the amount of time you use
a computer or phone to communicate is develops and improves your interpersonal
communication competence if you are aware of your communication strengths and weaknesses
and work on your weaknesses.
Nonverbal communication in my interactions illustrated were precise. I used emoticons to
relay messages that I felt would not be able to be received correctly with just words. For
example; the text message conversation with my husband at 8:28 in the morning. We were
conversing about what time to start driving on a particular day but what he was understanding
Communication

and what I was understanding via text where not using the same tone. I found myself using
emoticons to relay frustration and confusion. My husband in turn stopped texting and relied on a
verbal conversation via the phone. As I draw your attention to the FaceTime conversation with
my mother at 4:35 in the evening, it started with a smile and excitement in tone but my
nonverbal gesture of smile was not my usual smile. This particular smile signaled my mother that
I was unhappy about something. My mother knew something was making me upset and she
asked me. I had not realized that I was still bothered about the previous conversation I had at
3:55 in the afternoon with the warranty company. Although I thought I swept that conversation
under the rug my mother knew something was wrong and she just let me vent. After venting I
smiled again and she said “now you let it go”. Overall the types of communication I had
throughout the day were evenly calming and frustrating but I was also able to gain insight on
how I could have improved my spoken and nonverbal communication. One piece of advice that I
can use from Bevan and Sole to improve my computer-mediated-communication is to analyze
not only my own communication but observe how others communicate regardless if friend or
stranger.

Running Head: Computer Communication
Cell text – I used words and emoticons to express my concern. I spoke with informal
language and used slang to create the atmosphere of concern and showing that I was scared for
his safety. I noticed he understood my concern and he informed me of his safety. If I were with
him we both would have been able to read each other’s body language. We would have had the
same reaction and thoughts about each other’s safety.
Cell text – I used words with and emoticons along with punctuation to stress the
importance of my message. I spoke with informal language and used words to express my
concern of her safety. She immediately expressed her wellbeing which told me she understood
the importance of my message. If I had been in her presence this conversation would have never
existed so body language would not have been present for this event.
Cell text – I used words and emoticons along with punctuation to acknowledge the
feeling she was trying to express through text messages. I spoke with informal language using
slang words and abbreviated words with special characters to show friendship. If I had been at
work with her this conversation would have never happened. Instead we would have read each
other’s body language and comprehended our conversation and responded to each other’s
responses accordingly.
Cell – I checked my phone to see how much of the day had already past. I was most
likely bored and wondering what my options were for the rest of my day.
Cell call – I used words with good pronunciation and proper grammar to express the
relationship to be business not personal. I spoke with a more formal language using complete

words and the right tone of voice for the appropriate setting. If we were to talk in person I would
have use professional body language and proper language to communicate to the buyer.
Computer – I used the computer to complete the assignment for my online class. I use my
computer to further my education to more enhance my life experience.
Cell call – I used improper wording and slang to express our friendship and
understanding of each other. We used words to express excitement and adventure to enhance the
conversation. I spoke with informal language to set the tone of excitement and discouragement
during the conversation. If we were in person we would have used body language to express our
thoughts and wants.
Cell – I set the alarm on my phone to ensure I was awake before a specific time.
I communicate with my phone and computer for about four to five hours a day for
pleasure, education, and business. I use my phone and computer to learn, entertain, and
communicate with everyone who are too far to communicate in person with. This matters
because I must keep communication with my family and friends as well as professional
communication such as my place of employment. I also use these items to entertain myself such
as playing games. I also you these items and time to search things on the internet to further
educate myself about what is going on in the world and what is new.
We should pay special attention to our CMC because the endless demand of
communication and information about absolutely anything is constant. The need to learn
and research even communicate with people face to face has become overwhelmingly

important in today’s society. People are able to research any subject or speak to any
person because of CMC.
My interactions illustrated facial expressions and tone of voice. How important
was nonverbal communication in all of your computer-mediated interactions? The
nonverbal communications in all of my computer mediated interactions were very
important because they assisted my communication with the receiving person. Nonverbal
communication helps to set the mood and importance of conversation.
What function of language did your interactions illustrate?
My interactions illustrated both formal and informal language. The conversation
and person who I was speaking with decided the type of language I would use.
How important was verbal communication?
Verbal communication is very important to my conversations because it allows
us to fully explain and understand each other’s messages. It allows us to communicate
effectively.
What advice from Bevan and Sole could be used to improve your computermediated-communication?
We can use emoticons, punctuation, and capitalized words as nonverbal symbols that
provide additional meaning to the words we write (Sole, 2014 4.2).

Computer Mediated Communication
Communication is defined as “a process where two or more individuals strive to create a
shared memory using verbal and nonverbal messages in a variety of contexts” (Bevan, 2014). As
Bevan stated, communication can be verbal or non-verbal messages, but communication
messages can be misinterpreted when non-verbal gestures in a message opposite of what you are
saying.
Personally, I do not use my phone to send messages as much as others do. I like to make
phone calls and speak over the phone to avoid misinterpreted messages. I use my phone mostly
to pay bills or go to the social media websites. I only use my computer to work on my
assignments and/or to buy online. I am surprised on how much time do people use a computer or
phone to communicate with others throughout a twenty-four hour period.
Nonverbal communication in my interactions illustrated were precise. I used emoticons to
relay messages that I felt would not be able to be received correctly with just words. For
example, the text message that I sent my husband at 7:00 in the morning. We had conversation
about I was feeling down this morning, and he understood my message replaying that he can
relate how I feel because he saw my attitude. At 11:20 am, I wrote an informal post on Facebook
about how I was feeling during the morning, which most of my friends misunderstood and they
began to send me private messages on Facebook asking if I was having problems with my
husband. They sent me emoticons with exclamation, confused emoticons, and asked questions
like, Is everything ok with you and your
husband? I asked, why are you asking? And they replay, Because what you just post on your
Facebook. I told them that everything is fine with him and used smile emoticons to make them

understand what I was saying. At 2:30 pm, I called my husband to let him know that I was on my
way home, and he noticed that I still feel down and sad because of my tone of voice. We talked
until I got home and he told me that everything is going to be ok, and that tomorrow is going to
be another day.
Overall the types of communication I had throughout the day were evenly calming and
frustrating but I was also able to gain insight on how I could have improved my spoken and
nonverbal communication. An advice that I can use from Bevan and Sole to improve my
computer-mediated-communication, is to analyze my own communication and observe how
